Technology Spotlight:
Electrostatic Solutions

Our solutions support cleaner working environments while limiting any environmental impact. This includes increasing application efficiency, reducing overspray, and decreasing energy consumption.

How It Works

1. Fluid is mixed with air and atomized through the spray gun.

2. A negative electrostatic charge is applied at the applicator tip.

3. Paint particles attach to grounded metal parts—even in hard-to-reach areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of spray gun is best for automotive?

HVLP spray guns are ideal for primers and topcoats as they minimize overspray and improve transfer efficiency, saving paint and costs. Trans-Tech spray guns (like many other DeVilbiss models) provide slightly higher spray speed and power while still meeting transfer efficiency requirements. For best results, professional painters often choose high-performance spray guns like the DeVilbiss DV1 or GTi Pro Lite, specifically designed for automotive primer and topcoat applications.

What's the difference between HVLP and LVLP spray guns?

HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray guns use large volumes of air at low pressure to spray paint, minimizing overspray and increasing transfer efficiency. They’re ideal for achieving smooth paint surfaces while minimizing material waste. On the other hand, LVLP (Low Volume Low Pressure) spray guns use less air, ideal for paint shops with smaller compressors. LVLP guns also produce less overspray and can provide better control for detailed paint work, although spray speed may be slower than HVLP guns.

What nozzle size is best for automotive paint?

The ideal nozzle depends on the type of paint you’re spraying.

  • For primers, nozzles from 1.2mm to 1.3mm are typically recommended. They provide fine atomization for even, smooth coverage.
  • For topcoats, nozzles ranging from 1.3mm to 1.4mm are best, allowing for high-quality finish with proper flow.
  • For base coats, use larger nozzles, like 1.7mm to 2.0mm, to handle thicker materials and create even surfaces.

Devilbiss offers various gun tip sizes for most gun types, allowing you to choose what suits your material and job requirements. For more detailed information, please refer to these resources in our automotive finishing center.

What maintenance is needed to keep my spray gun working like new?

Regular cleaning after each use is crucial. Use appropriate solvents and cleaning tools to remove material residue. Regularly inspect and replace wear parts like needles, nozzles, and air caps to maintain optimal performance and spray quality. Using spray gun cleaning solutions or spray gun cleaning kits can make the job faster and easier.

Can I use disposable cup systems with DeVilbiss spray guns?

For best results, we recommend using the DeVilbiss DPC (DeKups®) disposable cup system, designed to reduce cleaning time and prevent contamination. DeKups® are compatible with all types of coatings, integrate mesh filters, and have convenient ratio markings for accurate coating measurement.

Gun vibrating, what should you do?

Tighten the fluid needle tip to 15-20 foot lbs and tighten the fluid needle tip.

How to fix a spray gun with heavy pattern at top or bottom?

You can rotate the air cap 180 degrees and if the heavy pattern changes, the air cap may be dirty or damaged, but if it doesn’t change, the fluid tip may be dirty or damaged.

Can DeVilbiss bumper pads be used on primed bumpers?

Current bumper pads are strong enough to sand most primed bumpers. However, they are not hard enough to level primer (remove uneven spots) on bumpers.

One can use current bumper pads to clean and degrease primed bumpers. However, they will not effectively level the primed surface and will still require sanding.
