Save time

Our heated hoses and preheaters warm up in less than 10 minutes and as little as 2 minutes vs. the industry average ranging between 30 minutes and an hour. This helps you start faster and get more done in a workday.

Technology spotlight: IntelliSpray™ ratio control

Provides the perfect mix, essential to spray foam applications, so you avoid costly mistakes that often result in product reapplication.

Multiple data inputs

Ensures a consistently ideal material mix, with no variability due to user configuration.

Material mixing

Occurs at the point of install where hoses meet at the gun for best application results.

Perfect 1:1 ratio

Results in high-quality work that avoids the risks of incorrectly installed foam.

FAQ

What type of spray gun is best for cars?

HVLP guns are ideal for basecoats and clearcoats because they reduce overspray and improve transfer efficiency—saving paint and money. Trans-Tech guns (like many DeVilbiss models) offer a bit more speed and atomization power while still meeting transfer efficiency requirements. For top-tier results, professional painters often choose high-performance guns like the DeVilbiss DV1 or GTi Pro Lite, which are engineered specifically for automotive base and clearcoat applications.

What’s the difference between HVLP and LVLP spray guns?

HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray guns use a high volume of air at low pressure to atomize paint, reducing overspray and increasing transfer efficiency. They’re great for getting a smooth finish while minimizing material waste. LVLP (Low Volume Low Pressure) guns, on the other hand, use even less air, which makes them ideal for shops with smaller air compressors. LVLP guns also create less overspray and can offer better control on detailed work, though they may spray more slowly than HVLP guns.

What size nozzle is best for automotive paint?

The ideal nozzle depends on the kind of paint you’re spraying.

  • For basecoats, 1.2mm to 1.3mm nozzles are typically recommended. They provide fine atomization for smooth, even coverage.
  • For clear coats, 1.3mm to 1.4mm nozzles work best, allowing for a high-quality finish with proper flow-out.
  • For primers, use larger nozzles, like 1.7mm to 2.0mm, to handle thicker materials and build up the surface evenly.

Devilbiss offers multiple tip sizes for most guns, so you can match the setup to your material and job requirements. For more detailed information, check out these resources on our automotive finishing hub.

What maintenance is required to keep my spray gun performing like new?

Regular cleaning after every use is critical. Use appropriate solvents and cleaning tools to flush out material residue. Periodically inspect and replace wear parts like needles, nozzles, and air caps to maintain optimal performance and spray quality. Using a spray gun cleaner or gun cleaning kit can help make the job quicker and easier.

Can I use disposable cup systems with DeVilbiss spray guns?

For the best results, we recommend using the DeVilbiss DPC (DeKups®) disposable cup system, which is designed to reduce cleanup time and prevent contamination. DeKups® work with all coating types, contain integrated mesh filters, and offer convenient ratio markings for accurate coating measurement.

Gun pulsating, what should you do?

Torque your fluid tip to 15-20 foot lbs. and tighten the fluid needle packing.

How do you fix a Spray gun that has a top or bottom heavy pattern?

You can rotate the air cap 180 degrees and if the heavy pattern changes, you may have a dirty or damaged air cap and if it doesn’t change then you may have a dirty or damaged fluid tip.

Can the DeVilbiss Bumper Prep Pad be used on primed bumpers?

The current bumper pad is aggressive enough to adequately abrade most primed bumpers. However, it is not rigid enough to level the primer layer (remove the uneven spots) on the bumper.

One can use the current bumper pad to clean and degrease a primed bumper. But it will not level the primed surface sufficiently and a sanding process will still be required.
